Prof. Yash Pal, a renowned name in the field of science, education and popularisation of science. At 82, he remains fresh and exuberates wit,charisma and substance as he gave me an overview and insight into science & education in India …what it is and what it should be ? How science teaching and curricullum should emerge from children and how new learnings takes place at the border of many disciplines.I had the opportunity of working with him during the “Turning Point days” which was a televison series on popular science in India and am absolutely thrilled with this reflective chat especially the ” Who am I , Prof Yash Pal ”
A Short Note :
Yash Pal has held several prominent positions during his career which includes Chief Consultant, Planning Commission (1983-84), Secretary, Department of Science & Technology (1984-86) and Chairman, University Grants Commission (1986-91).
Pal was known for his regular appearances on the science programme Turning Point telecast on Doordarshan, and for his knack of explaining scientific concepts in layman’s language. He has been on the advisory boards for several TV Science programmes like Bharat ki chaap.
In 1976 the Government of India awarded Pal the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to science and space technology.Pal was made a Marconi Fellow in 1980 for his work at the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad To recognize wise and humane leadership in applying modern communications technology to meet the needs of isolated rural villagers in India.
