The Workshop

Drug discovery is an expensive and time taking process and therefore new approaches based on chemoinformatics and bioinformatics are being adopted. The knowledge of the 3D structures of protein targets is now playing a major role at all stages of drug discovery. The distinct nature of biological and chemical information requires the integrated capabilities of both bioinformatics and chemo-informatics to decipher existing and hidden relationships. Bioinformatics and chemo-informatics have largely evolved independently from biology and chemistry. Cheminformatics is an inter-disciplinary subject of storage, processing and retrieval of chemical information. Bioinformatics and chemoinformatics have significantly assisted in lead optimization, fingerprinting, pharmacophore designing, target identification, QSAR and their application can lead to discovery of new molecules. Molecular modeling using 3D graphics and optimization techniques helps the scientists to understand how drugs bind to proteins in the body. Classically, protein structure has been exploited in lead optimization, a process that uses structure to guide the chemical modification of a lead molecule to give an optimized fit in terms of shape, hydrogen bonds and other non-covalent interactions with the target. Protein structure can also be used in target identification and selection.

Any homologue of identified known structure can be modeled using a variety of comparative modeling procedures. Lead modification is used for modification in order to improve desired pharmacological properties. A small part of a lead compound may be involved in the appropriate interaction. The relevant groups on a molecule that interact with receptor and are responsible for activity are collectively known as pharmacophore.

The workshop aims:

To familiarize the researchers and students with applications of bioinformatics and chemoinformatics in drug discovery.
To familiarize participants with current advances in the macromolecule structure prediction, including protein structure, protein folding, molecular dynamics and simulation.
To acquaint participants with in- silico chemical and structural fingerprinting, designing and preparation of lead molecules for drug designing and various tools and techniques to bioinformatics and chemoinformatics.
Objectives

The participants of the workshop will be accessing online resources of macromolecule libraries, sketching chemical compounds and building 3-D molecules, drug designing. They would also learn about prediction and analysis of various properties of compounds, bimolecular and structure prediction and visualization and analysis. The practical knowledge gained through this workshop will help them in enhancing their skills in utilizing tools for their application in basic and industrial research and employment potential.

Workshop Contents

The workshop will consist of lectures, group discussions, case studies, exchange & sharing of experience on :

Bioinformatics and its application

Biological Databases

Functional Genomics and Proteomics

Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt of India under its programme on Technology Systems Development (TSD) intends to support and catalyse technology development projects in the upcoming areas of molecular electronics, conducting polymer electronics, non-invasive and other biosensors. The submitted proposal should aim to establish the technical feasibility of emerging concepts in the areas of biomolecular sensors, conducting polymer based microactuators/artificial muscles, molecular electronic devices such as Memory Switching, Logic Gates, Diodes, Organic electronics devices like Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), Organic Field Effect Transistors, Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs), Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs), Biofuel Cells, Bio-photonics, Ion Selective FET (ISFET), Electronic-Nose-Tongue-Vision, Bio-metrics, conducting polymer based sensors for Biological Fluids, Bio-chips, Tactile Sensors, Microfluidics, Energy Devices, Super Capacitors, Information storage (memory) devices based on conducting polymers, Self-assembled Monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett films and other thin films. The emphasis should be towards development of a device or a technology process leading to a device and not a mere academic research.

Some of the other typical areas in which Proposals can also be submitted in TSD programme are Glass and Ceramics Technology Up-gradation, Water Purification and Rural Micro-water Management, Waste Utilization and Management, Public Health and Safety, Surface Engineering Techniques for Rejuvenation of Traditional Crafts, Laser/Plasmas/Microwave Technology, Decentralized Energy

Generation and Harvesting, Alternate Fuels, Fuel Conservation, Efficient Utilization of Fuels, ICTdriven Technologies, Innovative Civil Infrastructure Technologies, Platform Technologies for a Range of Applications. The above list is not exhaustive and Proposals in other innovative areas are equally welcome if the activity is perceived to be useful by DST for technology advancement in the country

and is not being taken up under any other major R&D programmes of the Government of India.

The Project Proposals could be submitted for financial support by scientists/engineers/technologists working in academic institutions/registered societies/R&D institutions/laboratories having adequate infrastructure/facilities to carry out technology development work/prototype building. DST would encourage multi-disciplinary proposals envisaging network/collaboration of various institutes having diverse expertise and facilities for synergistic implementation of the projects. Property Right (IPR), Technology Transfer to Industry with PI/Institute may be highlighted. Prescribed format is available under TSD programme at DST site: http://www.dst.gov.in

The guidelines for formulation and submission of projects and the prescribed format can also be collected from Shri Rajeev Sharma, Scientist-‘C’ and Member Secretary (PAC on Tech.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In recent times, the advancement in techniques used in biology has manifested the tremendous growth in Biotechnology, which resulted into the accumulation of large amount of biological data. The information present in these data is in hidden form and in order to extract the knowledge we need to implement advanced methods and algorithms of Information Technology. Bioinformatics provides the computational solutions to the complex biological problems associated with Genome and Proteome of organisms. The Bioinformatics has enhanced the speed of biological research and dramatically reduced the cost of research. The workshop focuses on various methods and algorithms that are currently being used by researchers to solve biological problems. In addition, it will discuss the tools and techniques implemented in bioinformatics for sequence and structure analysis.
