Linnaeus University is the result of a merger between Kalmar University and Växjö University. Together we will be creating a new, exciting university with 31 000 students and 2 000 employees. Linnaeus University will be a modern, international university in the Småland region of Sweden, where people can grow to reach their potential. For more information see: Lnu.se

The School of Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology and Microbiology. The research group of Computational Chemistry and Biochemistry now seeks a PhD student for studies on protein dynamics.

The research project will deal with amyloid protein aggregation. This process is common to numerous devastating diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and type II diabetes mellitus. The student will be involved in computational studies of amyloid aggregation. The selected PhD student will have unique opportunities to gain deep knowledge and skills in applying computational chemistry methods to biological macromolecules. Methods to be used include molecular dynamics simulations and quantum mechanical calculations. For relevant publications, see: J. Mol. Biol., 387 407–415 (2009) and J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 1 471–474 (2010). Further details on the group are given in the group’s web-page: http://lnu.se/research-groups/computational-chemistry-and-biochemistry-group?l=en

Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in a subject area of relevance for the present project. Documented training and experience of Computational Chemistry, Computational Biology, Physical Chemistry or a related area is a prerequisite. Written and oral communication skills in English are also essential. The student will need to have, or obtain in little time, working knowledge of the linux operating system. Experience with MD simulations, quantum chemistry packages, system administration, programming and/or high performance computer systems will be an advantage. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.

The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended by up to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. The starting point for the PhD education is negotiable.

The Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Program will bring together a network of junior scholars, professionals and mid-career applied researchers from the United States and other Western Hemisphere nations for a series of three seminar meetings and a Fulbright exchange experience.

At its core, the Fulbright NEXUS Program will foster collaborative and multidisciplinary research to address challenging regional issues and produce tangible results.

20 outstanding scholars and practitioners from the U.S. and abroad will be selected as Fulbright NEXUS Scholars to participate in the program through an open competition. Approximately one-third of grantees will be selected from the United States. Approximately two thirds of the grantees will originate from Western Hemisphere countries other than the United States. Program activities will commence in May 2011 and conclude in April 2012.

Fulbright NEXUS Program will provide a platform for scholars from across the region to engage in collaborative thinking, analysis, problem-solving and multi-disciplinary research in one of three inter-related topics:

•

Science, Technology and Innovation

•

Entrepreneurship

•

Sustainable energy

In order to create a platform for collaborative thinking and analysis, Fulbright NEXUS combines the core Fulbright research exchange experience with a series of three in-person seminar meetings and ongoing virtual communication among the multinational and multidisciplinary participants under the guidance of the Fulbright NEXUS Scholar Leader. NEXUS Scholars will be challenged to move beyond their individual research and to engage in collaborative examination of the program themes.

NEXUS Scholars will work in research teams along program thematic areas described earlier. Scholars will engage in integrated group research as members of designated teams. Combining nationalities and disciplines, each team will include 4-5 participants. In addition to the Scholar Leader, each of the NEXUS research teams will select a coordinator to lead their respective groups.

While NEXUS Scholars’ pursuit of individual research objectives will be intrinsic to a collaborative and comparative analysis of the issues elaborated by the program, prospective applicants should be advised that at the time of application they will be expected to identify up to three local stakeholders from a range of sectors (i.e. NGOs, government, private industries) that have a demonstrated commitment to the application of the proposed research projects as potential model solutions to real life challenges. Scholars will be expected to integrate selected stakeholders into their research and may invite up to two stakeholders to participate in the interim (second) group seminar meeting.

At the end of the program year, NEXUS Scholars will convene for the third and final meeting to share the results of their collaborative interactions and report on the accomplishment of program objectives and the national and regional implications of their findings. Scholars will disseminate policy-relevant recommendations, describe the concrete steps they have taken in implementing their projects and models at the local, national and/or regional level, and share the progress they have made and challenges they have faced in moving their recommendations from theory to practice.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 15 November 2010

In September 2010 an Erasmus Mundus Master’s course, called CEMACUBE (Common European MAster’s CoUrse in Biomedical Engineering) will start. Recently the grant application, submitted by RuG and UMCG, is accepted. Goal of this course is to prepare students from Europe and outside Europe for professions in Biomedical Engineering.

For a single university it is difficult to have enough knowledge of all sub-specialisations in Biomedical Engineering to teach their students on an adequate level. Also the required European scope is difficult to gain when students stick to a single university. Therefore a consortium of 6 universities has joined their knowledge and specific expertise into a 2-year European Master’s in Biomedical Engineering.

During the first year (semester 1 and 2), a student will follow lectures on all biomedical engineering subjects at one of the six universities, the 3rd semester (s)he will move to one of the participating universities to follow lectures on a specific topic, like medical imaging, tissue engineering or artificial organs. The fourth and last semester, a Master’s project will be performed on this specialisation at one of the 6 participating universities: the Universities of Groningen (The Netherlands), Aachen (Germany), Dublin (Ireland), Ghent and Brussels (Belgium) and Prague (Czech Republic). Each student will receive a double degree. Admission criteria are: a Bachelor in engineering and good knowledge of English (all teaching will be given in English), a convincing motivation letter and letters of reference.

Students that followed this European Master’s course in Biomedical Engineering are trained with a Europan view, experienced in intercultural and interdisciplinary teamwork. They will have a broad overview of the entire field of BME.

Apply now!

We are ready for applications for CEMACUBE 2011! Applicants may apply for the CEMACUBE programme (as well as for scholarships) until the following deadlines:

Scholarship Description: The Division of Genetics and Molecular Medicine has an exciting opening for a postdoctoral Research Associate in Bioinformatics / Statistical Genetics. The postholder will perform bioinformatic / statistical genetic analyses of DNA and RNA data collected from multiple human brain tissues. Methodological development will be strongly encouraged.

The appointment is based at King’s College London, but is an important component of a MRC-funded collaboration between King’s College London (KCL) and University College London (UCL). The project is at the forefront of current efforts to better understand the processes leading to common neurological and psychiatric disorders. Previous work has already identified important examples of associations between genetic variants and expression levels (so-called expression QTLs or eQTLs at the gene level and splicing QTLs or sQTLs at the alternative transcript level) in some brain tissues, but these have been limited both by the small number of brain tissues examined and also by the difficulty in acquiring suitable post-mortem samples. This project has successfully obtained high-quality samples from multiple brain tissues, and is in the process of generating very large datasets at the DNA and RNA levels, using a combination of array-based and Next Generation Sequencing technologies. Properly analysed, these data should greatly enhance our understanding of the functional processes linking known susceptibility loci to their respective neurological disorders, and should also lead to the discovery of new susceptibility loci and their mode of action through an increased understanding of their interconnected eQTL/sQTL pathways.

The postholder will spearhead the analyses of these data, and in particular will be looking for eQTLs and sQTLs across the human genome in multiple tissues collected from the same individuals. There are many computational and statistical challenges to be addressed. Efficient computational pipelines will be required in order to carry out these analyses in a timely manner. Expression levels among tissues will be highly correlated for some genes, and not for others (which will be of particular interest). Genes may co-express in some tissues, but not in others. A successful analysis strategy will intelligently adapt to all these scenarios, and there will be ample opportunity for methodological work. Competency in both statistics and especially programming (HPC computing, java/C, perl/python or equivalents) are essential requirements.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 11/11/2010

Scholarship Description: Landing a helicopter on a ship at sea is one of the most demanding and hazardous tasks that a helicopter pilot can face. Ship-based helicopters routinely operate from a rolling, pitching and heaving flight deck with degraded visibility in close proximity to the ship’s superstructure. Additionally, air moving over the ship, due to the combined effects of the ship’s forward speed and the prevailing wind, creates a complicated flow field in the lee of the superstructure, over the landing deck. This ‘air-wake’ is characterised by turbulent eddies at various scales, by vortices and moving shear layers that combine to buffet the helicopter during approach and landing. In some conditions the air-wake disturbance may lead to pilot workload which is so high, or control margins that are so reduced, that it is unsafe to attempt a landing or take-off.

The University of Liverpool has successfully developed expertise and techniques that use a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), offline analysis and piloted flight simulation to investigate the effects of unsteady ship air wakes on helicopters operating from ships. CFD has been used to compute unsteady air-wake datasets which have been imported into the FLIGHTLAB simulation environment to provide realistic unsteady flow fields for the simulated deck landings. The research has reached a stage where the techniques and procedures for simulated flight tests are sufficiently robust that they can be applied in an industrial environment. The fundamental research into the ship-helicopter dynamic interface is, however, ongoing, and the aim of this studentship is to continue the research and development into improvements in simulation fidelity.

The studentship is provided for a period of 42 months, and covers tuition fees and a stipend at the current EPSRC rate for living expenses. Due to funding restrictions, only UK/EU students are eligible to apply. Candidates should be highly motivated and committed to their PhD studies, and have a first-class honours degree preferably in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering. High calibre candidates with degrees in Physics or Mathematics will also be considered. Given the computational work required in the project, experience with computer programming is essential. Background knowledge of CFD and flight mechanics will also be beneficial.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 29 October 2010

The Adaptive Sensors Group (ASG, see http://www.dcu.ie/chemistry/asg/) is a large, multidisciplinary research unit hosted by the National Centre for Sensor Research (NCSR), in state-of-the-art facilities situated on the campus of Dublin City University. Core funding for the ASG is provided by Science Foundation Ireland through the CLARITY CSET , supplemented by significant project based income provided by Enterprise Ireland, the Marine Institute, EPA, EU-FP7, and Industry partners. This research will be closely aligned with related activity in smart materials, sensor miniaturisation, wireless communications and microfluidics that will ultimately lead to breakthroughs impacting on sensor web technologies, and particularly the development of autonomous devices for monitoring water quality (e.g. potentiometric sensors for heavy metal determination) and/or personal health (e.g. wearable chemo/biosensors). Due to continuing success, particularly with respect to Industry-partnered projects, a Postdoctoral Researcher position has been created to expand our research effort in Electroactive Materials / Electrochemical Sensors.

Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to Professor Dermot Diamond, he/she will:
• Undertake research with respect to electrochemical sensors, polymer actuators or other electrochemical redox materials into prototype devices and platforms, targeting potential applications in environmental monitoring and wearable sensors
• Assist Postgraduate students in their research activities
• Contribute material for intensive short courses targeting academic and industry participants
• Assist with the preparation of funding proposals involving electrochemical sensors/electroactive materials to external agencies, including FP7 proposals
• Assist with the management of external industry and academic partners
• Attend, and contribute to, group meetings
• Maintain an up-to-date profile on the group website

Fellowship Application Deadline: 1November2010
